Project Overview

DeTick is a mobile application designed to help users identify different types of ticks and understand potential health risks associated with tick bites. The app provides educational content, identification tools, and guidance on when to seek medical attention.

I led the end-to-end product design, creating a simple, reassuring experience for users dealing with a potentially stressful health situation. The app needed to be both informative and calming, providing accurate information without causing unnecessary panic.

The Challenge

Tick identification is a sensitive health topic that requires careful balance between providing helpful information and avoiding medical advice. Key challenges included:

  • Creating a calming, reassuring user experience for anxious users
  • Providing accurate identification without giving medical diagnoses
  • Making complex health information accessible to general audiences
  • Encouraging appropriate medical consultation when necessary
  • Designing for users who may be stressed or panicked

The Solution

DeTick identification

I designed DeTick as a supportive, educational tool that empowers users with knowledge while maintaining appropriate boundaries around medical advice:

  • Visual Identification Guide: Clear, detailed images and descriptions of common tick species
  • Risk Assessment Tool: Simple questionnaire to help users understand potential risks
  • Educational Content: Easy to understand information about tick-borne diseases
  • Action Guidance: Clear recommendations on when to seek medical attention
  • Calming Design: Soothing colors and reassuring language throughout the experience

Design Process

The design process involved extensive research into both user needs and medical accuracy:

  • User Interviews: Spoke with people who had experienced tick encounters
  • Content Strategy: Developed clear, non-alarming language for health information
  • Visual Design: Created calming, trustworthy interface design
  • Usability Testing: Tested with users in simulated stress scenarios
